Thousands of demonstrators descended on Jerusalem, inspired by a similar demonstration in Canada, to protest Israel’s ongoing Covid mandates.
Thousands of Israelis took to the streets in Jerusalem to protest the country’s coronavirus restrictions, drawing inspiration from the ‘Freedom Convoy’ demonstration in Canada’s capital against ongoing vaccine mandates.
In videos circulating on social media on Monday, long lines of cars could be seen driving for Jerusalem, apparently from cities across Israel. Protesters blared their horns, waved placards, and screamed slogans against the Covid mandates, some even holding Canada’s national flag while doing so, just like their Canadian trucker counterparts.
A number of protesters later marched to the city’s parliament building to continue the protest. Though officials have yet to confirm the number of protestors and vehicles that took part in the action, media reports indicated that thousands of people and hundreds of cars took part, while organizers put the number in the tens of thousands.
Though some of Israel’s Covid restrictions have been eased in recent weeks as daily infection numbers have decreased – such as the requirement to show proof of vaccination to enter certain public spaces – the policy remains partially in place, with mask mandates still in place for schools, shops, and healthcare facilities.
