The federal government gave only five days’ warning before a statewide mandate took effect on September 13, provoking nationwide protests against mandatory COVID passports in Bern and across the country.
Many indoor spaces in Switzerland, including restaurants, pubs, gyms, and venues, now require COVID passports.
Some estimates indicate between 10,000 – 15,000 people turned out to march in the capital within hours of the government’s announcement on Wednesday.
“Unlike our neighbors, we Swiss never protest, demonstrate or go on strike. If you see Swiss people demonstrating in the streets, it means that something is VERY wrong,” wrote Swiss independent journalist Based Helvetia alongside a photo of thousands in the streets of Bern last week.
