Taliban media channels are posting clips of fighters kitted out in what appears to be advanced equipment left behind by fleeing US forces that had been intended for Afghan security forces.
The Badri 313 Brigade featured in the videos are said to be guarding the Presidential Palace, after an unnamed US official confessed “Everything that hasn’t been destroyed is the Taliban’s now.”
The insurgents can be seen wielding M4 and M-16 assault rifles, wearing bulletproof vests and helmets with night vision goggles.
“Everything that has not been destroyed is now in the hands of the Taliban,” a US military source told Reuters.
An estimated $28 billion was spent by the US between 2002 and 2017 on helicopters, armoured vehicles, drones, weapons and other equipment in Afghanistan.
