After posting a short video on TikTok showing the horrific sandstorms and complaining about the intense heat and dust in Kuwait, an Egyptian man was arrested, then reportedly deported – and could still face legal action. The arrest underscored the country’s restrictions on expression and drew criticism on social media over his detention.
“I’m inside a dust storm right now, I literally can’t see anything in front of me… Fine, Kuwait, fine,” he adds, with an expletive in Arabic.
The clip went viral on Twitter, racking up tens of thousands of views.
Some social media users shared their own videos insulting the weather in support of the man and accusing Kuwait of restricting expression and mistreating a migrant worker.
