The Man Who Slapped Macron in the Face: “I Have No Regrets”

A man who spent several months behind bars for slapping French President Emmanuel Macron this summer has said he has received many letters in support of his “political” action. Damien Tarel said that he feels “no regret” over attacking the head of the French state. 

“I deplore physical violence. Nevertheless, it was just a tiny slap. I believe Macron has recovered extremely well,” he said, adding that he plans to attend protests against Covid-19 health passes in the near future.

The 28-year-old was released on Saturday after serving a prison sentence for slapping Macron in early June. He hit the president as he was greeting a crowd of spectators during a trip to southern France. 

“That day I came to challenge President Emmanuel Macron,” Tarel said after his release. “I don’t believe that democracy is voting once every five years for a representative who in the end doesn’t represent many people.” 

In a separate interview with France Bleu radio, the young man called his actions that day a “political act.” 

“If I had to go back in time, I would do the same thing again. I have no regrets,” he said.

French Minister: “Racist” Black African Defence League Should be Dissolved [Tweet]

The French interior ministry has launched an investigation into the ‘Ligue de Défense Noire Africaine’ (Black African Defense League), alleging that it is a racist organization that promotes hatred and prejudice.

On Monday, French interior minister Gérald Darmanin posted a statement on Twitter that the Ligue de Défense Noire Africaine (LDNA) would be banned in France following a weekend in which the group was allegedly involved in violence.

“I have decided to launch the procedure initiating the dissolution of the Black African Defense League. The speeches of this racist structure call for hatred and discrimination. Its actions cause disturbances to public order, like this weekend in Val-de-Reuil,” he tweeted.

The group describes itself on Facebook as a “revolutionary movement for the defence of the rights of Afro-descendants and Africans”. Almost 300,000 people have subscribed to its Facebook page. Its president and founder Egountchi Behanzin calls himself a “political activist, Pan-African resistance fighter, freedom fighter, revolutionary” in his Twitter bio. 

Over the weekend, members of the group were involved in a protest in Val-de-Reuil, in Normandy. In videos shared online, members of the group can be seen seemingly harassing public officials, as well as occupying the town hall. 

According to BFM TV, the group has 15 days to appeal against Darmanin’s move. If it elects not to appeal the decision, President Emmanuel Macron can ban the group. If it does appeal, France’s Council of State – an administrative justice body – will decide the matter.

Victor Orban Gives Pope Gift to Warn About Migration Problems [Tweet]

Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, asked Pope Francis not to let Christianity “perish” as he presented him with a gift that questioned the Supreme Pontiff’s support for mass immigration.

“At the meeting on Sunday, according to state media, Orban even-handed the Pope a provocative gift: A copy of a letter from a 13th-century Hungarian king to then-Pope Innocent IV, asking for Rome’s help to defeat an onslaught of foreign invaders — an apparent reference to migrants in the 21st century,” reports CBS News.

“PM Orbán met Pope Francis and presented a letter that King Béla IV wrote for Pope Innocent IV in 1250,” he wrote. “The King warned of the looming threat of the Tatar invasion and called for the unity of Europe. He was ignored. 35 yrs later HU fended off the Tatars with great bloodshed.”

However, Pope Francis is unlikely to change his mind and this was emphasized when he told a crowd in Budapest that Hungarians should “extend their arms to everyone,” referring to migrants and refugees.

Facebook Censors German Anti-Lockdown Campaign To Prevent People From Seeing It [Tweet]

Starting with the removal of the German anti-lockdown group Querdenken’s pages and Instagram profiles, Facebook has created a new category of “social harm” contributed by legitimate users.

Facebook’s head of security policy Nathaniel Gleicher announced the action on Thursday, saying that his team has been working for months to “expand our network disruption efforts so we can address threats that come from groups of authentic accounts coordinating on our platform to cause social harm.”

Gleicher says his group has removed a network of Facebook and Instagram accounts, pages and groups “for engaging in coordinated efforts to repeatedly violate our Community Standards, including posting harmful health misinformation, hate speech and incitement to violence.” 

Sharing their domains on Facebook and Instagram has been blocked as well, he added, but noted that “we aren’t banning all Querdenken content.”

There have been multiple mass protests against coronavirus lockdowns in Germany, with the authorities denouncing them as the work of the “far-right,” neo-Nazis and other extremists. While the UN special rapporteur on torture Nils Melzer raised concerns about police brutality in dispersing the demonstrations, last month Berlin police responded that violence is “still part of our legal system.

Facebook Knows Instagram Can Harm Teens – But Keeps It a Secret [Tweet]

Instagram is harmful to a majority of its young users, especially teenage girls. This is evidenced by internal research conducted by Facebook, which owns Instagram. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) obtained access to the results of these studies.

Young people blame social media for increasing anxiety and depression. Many of them would like to stay less on Instagram, but they lack self-control. “The teens said they don’t like how much time they spend on the app, but they feel like they should be there. They often feel “addicted” and realize that Instagram is bad for their psychological well-being, but they cannot stop themselves, ”said Facebook researchers.

Instagram users’ drive to share the best and look their best, and the fact that social media is addictive, can push teens into eating disorders, unhealthy body perception and depression, according to a March 2020 study.

The results of this study were seen by top managers of Facebook, including the founder of the company Mark Zuckerberg, follows from the documents received by the WSJ.

“The studies we have studied show that using apps to connect with others can have positive effects on mental health,” Mark Zuckerberg said at a March 2021 US Congressional hearing in response to a question about the psychological well-being of children.

In August, Senators Richard Blumenthal and Marsha Blackburn asked to show them the results of a Facebook study of teen interactions with its platforms. Facebook responded that it was keeping such data under wraps “to facilitate frank and open dialogue within the company.”

“Facebook seems to be following the lead of the tobacco corporations – targeting teens with a potentially dangerous product and hiding scientific data from the public,” Blumenthal told WSJ.

Australian Defence Minister Mocked for Not Knowing How to Do Elbow Bump [Video]

Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton has found himself in quite an awkward situation as he posed for a photo with his South Korean counterpart Suh Wook. The latter raised his arm in order to do a COVID-19 friendly elbow bump.

However, Peter Dutton didn’t appear to understand what he was supposed to do and simply raised his hand in a similar manner. Mr Wook’s attempt to right the situation made it even more awkward. As a result, the South Korean defence minister had to take his counterpart’s arm and show him what to do.

A video showing the awkward situation went viral immediately after it was posted online. Many users admitted that Peter Dutton made their day as they were crying with laughter.

Many users tried to guess what the defence minister thought he was doing when attempting to do an elbow bump.

Joe Biden is “Making the Taliban Great Again!” according to billboards commissioned by a former Pennsylvania state legislator. Biden is depicted on the placard as a Taliban militant with a rocket launcher and a turban.

The signs were paid for by former Penn. State Sen. Scott Wagner, who told local media he thinks Biden really screwed the pooch in Afghanistan.

“I saw the image [of Joe Biden,] I got it from a friend a few weeks ago. The picture tells the story. We pulled out of Afghanistan too quickly and we left so much of American equipment,” Wagner told WHTM.

“Joe Biden has made us look like a fool. I feel so bad, words can’t describe what I would say to someone who was wounded or someone’s family who had a soldier pass away in the country after all this happened.”

Major Protest Against Covid Passports in Switzerland [Video]

The federal government gave only five days’ warning before a statewide mandate took effect on September 13, provoking nationwide protests against mandatory COVID passports in Bern and across the country.

Many indoor spaces in Switzerland, including restaurants, pubs, gyms, and venues, now require COVID passports.

Some estimates indicate between 10,000 – 15,000 people turned out to march in the capital within hours of the government’s announcement on Wednesday.

“Unlike our neighbors, we Swiss never protest, demonstrate or go on strike. If you see Swiss people demonstrating in the streets, it means that something is VERY wrong,” wrote Swiss independent journalist Based Helvetia alongside a photo of thousands in the streets of Bern last week.

UK Authorities: Vaccine Passports Are Essential day After They Were To Be Cancelled [Tweet]

Just a day after health secretary Sajid Javid claimed that vaccine passports had been fully withdrawn, the UK government has reiterated that they will remain an important instrument in the fight against Covid-19.

During his media rounds yesterday morning, Javid said that vaccine passports represented a “huge intrusion into people’s lives,” adding, “I am pleased to say that we will not be going ahead.”

However, within 24 hours, the government has indicated that the system will in fact form a “first-line defence” against a winter wave of coronavirus.

“No 10 said checks on the vaccine status of people going to nightclubs and other crowded events remained a crucial part of the government’s winter Covid plan due to be unveiled by the prime minister tomorrow,” reports the Times.

It appears as though the only change is that the passports won’t be introduced at the end of this month, appearing instead during early winter when COVID cases will inevitably and conveniently begin to rise again.

Hundreds of beachgoers enjoy the sun and go about their business in the video from New South Wales, Australia, while government authorities threaten fines over a bullhorn.

An angry Waverley Council representative threatens fines for violating rigorous COVID restrictions while beachgoers disregard her pleas at Sydney’s North Bondi beach.

““Please put your mask on. Otherwise fines will apply. Also remember, social distancing is vital. We’re not out of this mess yet, and if you are outside of the 5 kilometer LGA, again, you are in breach of the public health order,” the woman said.

At that point, 7News Australia panned to several police officers confronting and issuing fines to several beachgoers.

Nearly 100,000 Russian and Belarussian soldiers, sailors, and airmen are participating in major military drills that span half of Europe and include hundreds of aircraft, armoured vehicles, and even missile systems.

Zapad-2021 drills had begun in earnest, across 14 separate training grounds from the Baltic Sea to Central Russian cities like Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod.

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin arrived on a working visit to the Mulino training ground, where the main stage of the joint military exercises Zapad 2021 is taking place.

“During this stage, the military formations of the Russian military forces in cooperation with the military contingents of the armed forces of Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as personnel from India and Mongolia worked out the action of repelling the enemy’s offensive,” the video said.

Moscow’s military commanders insist that while the exercises involve large numbers of squadrons and military hardware, the quantity of troops involved in any one set of exercises does not exceed 6,400 people, in line with requirements under international law.
