Elon Musk: Tesla HQ Moves to Texas From Silicon Valley [Tweet]

Tesla will relocate its headquarters from Palo Alto, California to Houston, Texas, co-founder Elon Musk revealed at the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting, citing limitations on the company’s expansion in the Bay Area.

“I’m excited to announce that we’re moving our headquarters to Austin, Texas,” Musk announced.

“It’s tough for people to afford houses, and people have to come in from far away,” he said of the current headquarters in California. “There’s a limit to how big you can scale in the Bay Area.”

“Just to be clear, we will be continuing to expand our activities in California,” Musk added. “As I said, our intention is to increase output from Fremont and Giga Nevada by 50%… If you go to our Fremont factory, it’s jammed.”

Musk himself has already relocated to Texas, blasting California’s policies and Covid-19 mandates in a December 2020 speech while noting that Tesla and SpaceX – both of which he runs – were among the last manufacturers left in the state.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has already welcomed Musk’s company to the state. “The Lone Star State is the land of opportunity and innovation,” Abbott tweeted.

Google & YouTube Prohibit Ads On ‘Climate Change Denial’ Content [Tweet]

In an effort to combat “climate change denial,” Google and YouTube would no longer monetize content that contradicts the “scientific consensus” on global warming, deleting all ads from posts containing inaccurate claims.

The company announced the move in a Thursday blog post, updating its policies on ads and monetization.

“Our advertising and publisher partners … have expressed concerns about ads that run alongside or promote inaccurate claims about climate change,” it said, noting that this is not only bad for business, but impacts content creators as well.

“That’s why today, we’re announcing a new monetization policy for Google advertisers, publishers and YouTube creators that will prohibit ads for, and monetization of, content that contradicts well-established scientific consensus around the existence and causes of climate change.”

While the company did not offer a detailed definition of the proscribed content, it cited a few examples, including posts that deem climate change “a hoax or a scam,” as well as “claims denying that long-term trends show the global climate is warming, and claims denying that greenhouse gas emissions or human activity contribute to climate change.”

Canadian PM: All Unvaccinated Federal Employees To be Placed on Unpaid Leave [Video]

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has given all federal employees until the end of October to get the vaccine or risk being put off work with no pay, even those who work remotely, The Globe and Mail reports.

He also announced anybody 12 and older will be required to be vaccinated to travel on a public train or plane within Canada saying, “testing is not an option.”

When asked about those who refuse the vaccine, Trudeau claimed the goal “is not to punish people who don’t want to get vaccinated,” but to protect vaccinated Canadians from the unvaccinated.

As estimated, there are about 300,000 civil servants in Canada. To date, more than 80% of the population aged 12 and over has already been vaccinated against coronavirus in Canada. Trudeau called these measures “some of the most stringent in the world”.

US Government Ordered Google to Track Users’ Searches [Report]

Forbes obtained the information via ‘accidentally unsealed’ court documents, which show that the FBI and Department of Homeland Security are secretly issuing keyword warrants to Google, ordering the search engine company to track and provide user’s data on anyone who searches specific names, addresses or phone numbers.

Critics argue that the practise violates the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches, and have described such cases as “effectively fishing expeditions.”

Jennifer Granick, surveillance and cybersecurity counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union warned that “Trawling through Google’s search history database enables police to identify people merely based on what they might have been thinking about, for whatever reason, at some point in the past.

“This never-before-possible technique threatens First Amendment interests and will inevitably sweep up innocent people,” Granick added, further warning “especially if the keyword terms are not unique and the time frame not precise.”

“To make matters worse, police are currently doing this in secret, which insulates the practice from public debate and regulation,” Granick urged.

Google responded to the news with a statement defending its actions.

Croatian President Criticized COVID Restrictions: “These Bans Don’t Make Sense” [Tweet]

Croatian President Zoran Milanović has spoken out against COVID restrictions, suggesting that citizens should abandon complying with them. His latest statement came during a ceremonial event at the University of Zagreb this week.

“I walked into a room here today and everyone has masks. And why? Everyone is vaccinated,” Milanović said during a press conference. “Those who are vaccinated are not in danger, then why are they wearing masks? It’s unbelievable how obedient people are, even when they shouldn’t be.”

“These bans don’t make sense. COVID certificates are trifles, and those measures that were adopted last year are an encroachment on fundamental freedoms. This must not happen again.”

Facebook, Insta & WhatsApp Down Worldwide [Tweet]

Facebook has crashed – one of the largest in recent history. Facebook’s Instagram and WhatsApp also stopped working. Social media sites have appeared to be coming back online after several hours of error messages and outages, according to users with Facebook’s community of nearly 3 billion accounts.

The outage, which began around 11:30 EST, impacted Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp users worldwide. The company’s engineering team has issued an apology alongside an announcement of the return of its services.

“Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger are coming back online now,” Mark Zuckerberg said on Facebook.]

“Sorry for the disruption today – I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about,” he said.

Reports from The New York Times indicate that employees were unable to enter buildings as their badges weren’t working on access doors, and that their internal tools and platforms were also down.

Facebook’s services have slowly been coming back on since around 7:00 p.m. EST. The problem, at least somewhat, has been resolved.

A small BGP error caused one of the world’s richest men to lose $6 billion. A small BGP error caused the internet to come to a screeching halt like a rush-hour traffic jam. A small BGP error took Facebook offline.
